Borrowing From Other Libraries

Howard Miller Public Library card holders are eligible to borrow items from other libraries in the Lakeland Library Cooperative system and from MeL (Michigan E-Library). Through Lakeland, you can borrow books, audiobooks, CDs and DVDs. Through MeL, only books are requestable at this time. Learn more about borrowing books from non-Lakeland libraries by following this link to our MeL page.

Here are a few things to remember when placing an item on hold from another library:

  • New items and Express items are not requestable. It usually takes 6 months before these items become available to request.
  • Lakeland and MeL materials can take 1 to 6 weeks to arrive.
  • The lending library's due dates, fees and fines apply. If an item from another library is damaged, it is sent back to them for review, and they will contact the patron.
  • MeL libraries can charge up to $100.01 for books that are damaged or lost.  This does not mean that you will be charged that amount if something happens, just that libraries have the right to choose how much to charge.
