The City of Zeeland (population 5,645) is seeking a dynamic and experienced fire/rescue professional to serve as a Full Time Fire Rescue Chief. This is a unique opportunity for a visionary leader to shape the future of a modern Fire/Rescue Department while remaining hands-on and deeply connected to the community.
About the Role
As a department head and member of the City Management Team, the Fire Rescue Chief will oversee all aspects of the Zeeland Fire/Rescue Department including:
- Fire prevention and control
- Emergency medical services
- Department administration
- Strategic and operational planning
- Community risk reduction
- Communications
- Recruitment and retention of personnel
The department currently consists of 27 personnel, operates out of two stations, and has an annual operating budget of $1,610,290. The Chief is appointed by the Mayor with City Council approval and reports to the City Manager for day-to-day operations.
Qualifications
Education & Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Fire Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Firefighter I & II
- Fire Officer III
- Michigan Fire Inspector Certification
- Plan Review Certification
- Licensure to meet departmental MFR standards
Experience: Minimum of 10 years in firefighting or emergency medical services, with at least 5 years as a Fire Officer in a progressively responsible role

Compensation
Salary Range: $76,000 to $118,000 annually
